Children’s Services: Receives reports and investigates incidents of child abuse and neglect, including sexual abuse and dependency of children. The goal is to keep families intact and to keep the child safe in his/her home. A child may need to be removed from their home if they are in danger. Ongoing case management services are provided to families to remedy the situation and improve conditions in order for the child to be safe. Foster parents are also trained and licensed through the State of Ohio.
Adult Protective Services are provided to adults age 60 and over who are being allegedly abused, neglected or exploited. Services are arranged in order to improve their situation.
Child Support: Works with both custodial and absent parents in order to establish and enforce child support orders so that the child’s needs can be met. They can assist in locating non-custodial parents, paternity establishment, establishing cash and health insurance orders, among other services. They can also assist in reviewing and adjusting existing child support orders. A seek work program assists in locating employment for those non-custodial parents who are unemployed.
Financial and Medical Services: Consists of the following benefits
Cash Benefits: Ohio Works First cash assistance is a monthly income provided to low income families. Eligible families must have a child under 18 in the household and meet financial requirements. Those receiving these benefits must participate in a work activity. There are government imposed limits on the length of time a family can receive cash assistance.
Food Assistance (SNAP): Provides supplemental income to families that need extra assistance with their monthly food costs. The amount that each family receives is based on income, family size and expenses. These benefits can only be used to purchase food items and most grocery stores accept these benefits.
Medicaid: A health insurance benefit program provided to assist individuals with rising health care costs. There is a variety of Medicaid programs available according to family situations and each has separate financial guidelines. There is also Medicare premium assistance available. Healthchek services are offered to children birth through twenty years to provide screenings for early detection of any medical problems.
Employment and Family Services: Consists of the following services
Ohio Means Jobs Shelby County: A location for employment and training needs where all services are free of charge. Computers are available for public use to search for jobs and to research training opportunities. Job vacancies in the immediate area are posted on a daily basis for job seekers to pursue. Other job seeking services include resume completion, internet access, faxing and copy access, and employment related workshops. Registration in the state sponsored job searching web site, www.ohiomeansjobs.com ,is also available. No appointment is needed and customers are served on a walk in basis by qualified staff.
Rapid Response activities are provided to those who are facing a lay off or plant closure. These sessions are normally provided at the employer’s location. Services are reviewed with the workers that may assist in locating new employment.
The Workforce Investment Act helps assists individual with training costs to those who need additional skill attainment in order to become employed or earn better wages.
Work Activities: Recipients of cash assistance and some food stamp recipients are required to participate in a work activity, assigned by an Employment and Family Services Specialist. The goal of the activity is to lead the individual towards gainful employment. Work activities that may be assigned include job searching and being assigned to a work site within the community. Failure to participate may jeopardize the benefits of the participant.
Publicly Funded Child Care: These servicesassist families with the cost of child care while the parents/caretakers are employed or in school. Income guidelines apply and are based on family size. Those eligible families are required, in most cases, to pay a portion of the child care cost. Parents may choose to utilize child care services at a licensed child care center or a family child care provider that is licensed by The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.
Individuals, who wish to care for children in their home, may go through the certification process through Job and Family Services. No more than six children at one time are allowed. The home must pass safety standards and ongoing training is required.
Comprehensive Case Management Employment Program (CCMEP): CCMEP is designed for individuals ages 14-24 who are ready to make a change in their lives. This program helps participants determine what kind of employment and educational goals to set for themselves. With the support of an Employment Specialist, participants will create a plan to accomplish those personalized goals. Participating in this program allows individuals to work through challenges to finding and retaining employment by providing various services, such as career counseling and funding for training. The ultimate goal is for participants to be economically self-sufficient.
